It works differently — Zot protocol allows for a caching of the same identity (and some content) across multiple instances in a sort of “multi copy backup” schema. ATProto just allows the migration of identity to a different server with secure key authorization. But the data and profile stays in one location at all times. Zot literally allows for “profile superimposition” where you could log into one instance and see the same information everywhere.
