In the spirit of POSSE, I just spent 3 hours trying to get some backfeeds from silos like Instagram and Facebook going… I made it work before, but I can’t remember what I did with my last website that made it work.

It’s a real head scratcher. I guess I’ll need to ensure crossposting is turned on here at StarrWulfe HQ then I won’t have to deal with this foolishness again.

If anyone has some experience with Brid.gy and how to do this effectively, please give me a shout. 🙇🏾‍♀️

  1. @starrwulfe@starrwulfe.xyz Also need to remember to turn on markdown mode over here too!

  2. @snarfed.org wanna give me a schematic on how you’ve got your site plumbed so I can wire things up properly over here ? 🙏🏾

  3. @starrwulfe Neither of those sites work reliably with brid.gy because they deliberately decided not to.

  4. @jeremycherfas I’m aware— there’s a browser extension involved that was working in the past but now seems to have bitten the dust.

I’m seriously getting to the point where I’m just gonna shut everything off and just only do activity pub and microblog for commenting.

Every now and then I have a good discussion surrounding some of my posts in Instagram/Threads and I wanna keep those.

  5. @starrwulfe Yeah, it is tough. You want to be where your friends will see you, and also where you have ownership, and it may not be possible to have everything under one roof.

  6. @jeremycherfas Exactly. I guess I’m trying to emulate some sort of archival snapshotting process for all the places I have had these really good discussions to be honest.

I’m a TERRIBLE blogger, probably the result of being a journalist — I’m great at observing other people’s stories and can never decide if/when/why I should tell my own. But I manage to pull it out of myself in the course of conversations (like this one!) and it is there where I usually find golden no, platinum nuggets of information that I may want to refer back to at some point in time.

…I’m just holding out a thin shred of hope that Threads will have some sort of ActivityPub functionality at some point as “promised” and 85% of my friends won’t need to do anything at all.

  7. For Instagram/Facebook specifically? There’s currently no real way that we know of to do automated IG backfeed. Bridgy did it via a browser extension for a while, but eventually IG’s bot detection started shutting down people’s accounts for using it, including mine and @aaronpk.com‘s. 😢
